Pictoral Imaging Checklist

(Created by Dana Wheeles, May 2005)

  1. Image Management: Licensing Info, copyright information recorded
  2. Make folder in Imaging (desktop) with three sub-folders: orig, adj and jpg
  3. Scan original (save as orig TIFF)
  4. Enter adjustments into IPROD
  5. Convert TIFFs to JPGs
  6. Open IView. Place JPGs in existing institution folder (or create new folder: save on desktop and drag into IView when done)
  7. Create HTML gallery: MAKE, HTML Gallery, CREATE, Bill's Little Thumbs, CHOOSE
  8. Enter JPGs in SOURCE
  9. Add to IMAGES ADDED TO SOURCE Excel database
  10. Update RAPs and RAWs: Image ids and copyright (don't forget comment field)
  11. Burn CD and backups (don't forget to add CD # to Excel)
  12. Enter into folder on Algernon for digital backup
  13. Delete images from TO BURN folder

Procedures for Book Scanning

  1. Turn on the flatbed scanner.
  2. Open to desired page, and place book face down on the scanner.
  3. Open Photoshop. Under File, select Import, then the scanner's name.
  4. Select Office Mode.
  5. For Image Type, select Color.
  6. For Document Source, select Document Table.
  7. For Size, select whatever is the maximum.
  8. For Resolution, 600 dpi.
  9. Do a Preview scan, and adjust as needed. Define the area, leaving a small border of equal proportions around the book on all sides, by drawing a box around it with a cropping tool.
  10. From the Image menu, select Rotate, if needed.
  11. From the View menu, select Fit on Screen. If brightness, contrast, or colors need adjusting, go to Image and select them from the list under Adjustments.
  12. If needed, re-crop.
  13. If crooked, use the Measure tool (hiding under the Eye dropper!) to align
  14. Save in TIFF folder, naming according to workcode and page number. When done with scanning, move to algernon/imagesworking/microfilm and a project-specific folder.

Microfilm Scanning Procedures

  1. Turn on the MS 800 scanner. Insert microfilm reel and locate assigned text. Rotate, focus, and zoom the viewer for clear and horizontal image.
  2. Locate the RAD to which the assigned text corresponds. Refer to Rossetti Archive in browser or Telnet session.
  3. Locate Rossetti desktop shortcut in order to open the Rossetti folder on the F drive. Make a folder with two subfolders (BMP and TIFF) to hold image files from assigned text.
  4. Open the Scanning Utility Program. Go to File/Scanner Settings in order to verify that the software recognizes the MS 800 scanner. If the software fails to recognize the scanner, restart the PC.
  5. Go to File/Scanner Settings and select the following options:
    • Mode: 256 grayscale
    • Resolution: 200 dpi
    • Page Size: Scanner's Maximum
    • Frame Area: Center
    • Brightness and Contrast: Start with default setting 131. Adjust as necessary.
    • Details: Always select the Polarity setting that is the inverse of your microfilm. For positive microfilm, select the negative setting; for negative microfilm, select the positive setting.
  6. Go to File/Scan Page in order to digitize page.
  7. Save digitized image as a bitmap file to corresponding BMP subfolder in F: Rossetti. Use old image filenames or assign new image filenames corresponding to the workcode and page transcription of assigned RAD.
  8. When scanning is complete, open Photoshop.
    • Go to File/Automate/Batch. Choose the Invert action and designate the subfolder from which the images to be batched will be drawn. Run batch process.
    • Use Image/Adjustments/Auto Contrast to clarify image.
    • Use Measure Tool from Toolbar and Image/Rotate Canvas in order to rotate images as necessary.
    • Use Crop Tool from Toolbar to edit the image as necessary. Remember to leave some proportional space open on all sides of object.
  9. Save images to TIFF subfolder.
  10. Delete BMP subfolder.
  11. Use SecureFX to FTP TIFFS to ALGERNON/SHARE1/imagesworking/microfilm.

Post-scanning Image Processing

  1. On the Macintosh, use FINDER to open a SHARE session to ALGERNON. Locate the TIFFS and move them to ANIMAL folder.
  2. On the Macintosh, use Graphic Converter to batch-convert TIFFs to JPEGs. Use the following settings:
    • Options: 1000 KB
    • Prefs: Change Extensions
    • Edit Batches:
      • Max Size: Width = 1000
      • Height = 1000
      • Proportional = Yes
      • Fit to Values = No
      • Resolution: Horizontal = 96 ppi
      • Vertical = 96 ppi
      • Convert Picture = No
  3. Move JPEGs to
    • ALGERNON/SHARE1/SOURCE/images (backups)
    • /home10/rossetti/img (the live image server)
  4. Enter imaging record into Images Added to Source database.
  5. Move TIFFs:
    • On the Mac, create a folder, named for this scanning project, within IMAGING!/Burninator. Put TIFFs here.
    • Also, copy TIFFs to the "to Zoomify" folder on the Mac desktop.
  6. Insert image ids in page image tags in RAD. When done, transform RAD and check that images work and are paired with the correct transcription page.

Making and Publishing Thumbnails

Update (3/19/07): thumbnails are now made automatically by a script in the overnight production build. See the history of this page for an archived version of the old procedure.

Zoomify

There is a folder on the Big Mac titled "to Zoomify". Copy a version of all tiffs processed into that folder. About once a month (or more frequently if there is a great deal of image processing being done) these tiffs can be put through the Zoomify application and broken down into folders.

To Zoomify:

  1. Go to Users/Beth/Zoomify
  2. Highlight the contents of the "to Zoomify" folder on the desktop and drag them onto the Zoomify target logo
  3. Wait for zoomify to finish. In addition to the tiffs, there will also be a series of jpg folders once the job is completed.
  4. FTP the folders into home10/rossetti/zoom
  5. Save the folders on Restoration in the zoomify file
  6. Dispose of the tiffs
