Juxta is a software tool which assists scholars in the performance of document collation and the creation of scholarly editions. We have identified the following high level steps in the work flow associated with the Juxta software. These steps help us to identify major areas of functionality, for purposes of project planning.

The steps are:

  1. Collect – When beginning a new project, the first task for the scholar is to select materials for study. This might be accomplished via a web interface or by selecting documents from the local file system.
  2. Normalize – Once the resources for the project are marshaled, the next step is to translate them into a common format. Once all of the items are in a like format, they can be compared and collated.
  3. Collate – Collation is an iterative step, over the course of a single Juxta session the scholar may many collations. However, it is a distinct operation which merits its own step.
  4. Analyze – Once the material has been collated, the scholar will want to analyze the results, comparing differences between documents and interpreting the data. The software facilitates interpretation of the results through an interactive user interface.
  5. Annotate – Now the scholar has drawn some conclusions about the material and wishes to record the conclusions. The functionality represented by this step allows the scholar to mark up the collated text.
  6. Publish – Publishing the results of collation, analysis, and annotation for others to view.
  7. Receive – Someone out there in the world receives and has the capability of viewing the result of the previous step.
